Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Its only the second day of the Test and I think Ali only bowled 8 overs for 20 odd which is probably what you'd expect as the wicket flattens out after any initial life.
Was reading that Scott Borthwick is favourite to replace Compton at 3 and bowl some leg spin.
He played one Test and batted eight while bowling some spin and the article optimistically said he could be the new Steve Smith .... going from leg spinner to specialist batsman.

I know Dr Matt likes the teenage leg spinner Mason Crane but he presumably needs more experience. That would be a bold choice though.
Rashid seems to be out of the picture a bit.

These are the sort of situations where you wished England picked a spinner in the side...

Is a MBE a sort of cup or drinking receptacle, then? Or the CBE? Otherwise your 'joke' doesn't really work, does it?

Oh dear! The chippy Aussie who claims to like a bit of friendly banter doesn't seem to be able to cope with a bit of friendly banter.

Valid point Westside... dying artform

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Teams these days want an allrounder (Stokes) & a batsman keeper so that they have effectively 13 players
Blame Gilchrist for the second part of that
He took the likes of James Foster and ruined their lives

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Northern - you make good points about the keeper situation, but are the any excellent glove men left in County Cricket? All seem to be batsmen first, which is what the counties want, as much as England.

Sadly, Foster will be heading for the retirement home soon.

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Buttler is not a proper keeper either?? Get your best gloveman in for test cricket... batsman make the runs... bowlers get you the wickets... and the best gloveman does what he is best at... we have become blinkered into thinking that we must have a batting/Keeper... it's unfair on Bairstow and Buttler... Stewart and to a lesser extent Prior (who was pretty ropey with the Turtles when he started) got away with it ... we have easily got a good enough batting line up now to worry about JB donning thegloves

Good innings by the Ginger Bradman

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
Bairstow may well end up playing as a batsman with Buttler or another behind the stumps & Root at 3.
Compton has to be finished

The sooner we get a proper wicket keeper in the better... not Bairstow's fault but he ain't no gloveman like his old man was...

I'd go as far as to say he won the Ashes at the Oval 2009, Durham 2013 & Trent Bridge 2015 in series where players like Cook failed.

Re: The Official England - Sri Lanka 3rd Test Thread
He has been the decisive player with the ball in several recent Ashes series. Probably England's most effective player
